Where it all began ...
The first shot on this
layout is the original
log cabin on Jake’s
property in town,
where he began the
collection that would
become Norway’s
historical museum.
The remaining shots
are scenes from in
and around the
museum, and include
a sawmill which is in
the process of being
disassembled at its
original site, and
which will be
reassembled on the
museum grounds.

Collection of Handsaws From the Lumbering Era
These were the tools of the trade for loggers and lumbermen in days gone by. Not many
folks today would sign up to do this kind of work without a chain saw and power tools!
The Old Ottoson Sawmill in Upper Pine Creek
This structure is going to be moved to a location behind the museum building on US-2.
It will be reassembled to look as it did in its heyday.
Interior of the Ottoson Sawmill
This saw blade is about four feet in diameter ... you’ll be able to see how timber was
produced after logs were brought to the mill, originally on horse-drawn sleds.
Preparing to Pour the Slab for the Sawmill at the Museum
This photo was taken in August 2011, as workers were preparing to pour a concrete slab
for the sawmill. You can see the mural on the side of the museum that faces the highway.
Ladies in the Dress Shop
These customers were probably looking for just the right accessory, as they were planning
to attend their 50th high school graduation reunion that evening ... August 13, 2011.
A Close Look Into Our Grocery Store
Those who were around in the forties and fifties will recognize items in this exhibit, which
shows equipment and merchandise typical of an old grocery store.
Skis and Skates in the Hardware Store
Norway had a reputation as a “skating town” years ago ... with noted athletes who excelled
in both figure and speed skating. It later became home to Norway Mountain Ski Area.
The Ol’ Two-Holer Out Back
A lot of modern folks have never encountered an outhouse, but we know that all those in
this picture were familiar with ‘em. This is a two-holer. The express line is on the right.
Chatting on the Porch of the Odill Residence
The Jake Menghini Museum is located on the grounds of the Odill homestead and pop
factory. It’s being restored, and part of it is open. This is the front porch area..
