What is biathlon? Biathlon is an Olympic sport combining cross-country racing with rifle marksmanship. Mt. Itasca’s biathlon venue boasts a 30-point range and 2, 2.5, 3.3 and 4.5-kilometer race loops that are snowed and impeccably groomed to international-race-course standards. (See trail maps at left!) These trails merge into a larger trail network for race warm- up and longer Nordic distance races throughout the season. Mt. Itasca Nordic Ski Association Mt. Itasca is home to the Mt. Itasca Nordic Ski Association (MINSA). Under the direction of coaches Vladimir and Petra Cervenka, the organization trains athletes year ‘round for both Nordic and biathlon competitions. The U.S. Junior National Biathlon Team is based at Mt. Itasca, bringing elite athletes from around the country to the venue for training and competition. In December 2011, MINSA will once again host the Senior World Team Trials. While there are many opportunities to race and train at Mt. Itasca, club athletes also gain the opportunity to travel throughout North America and Europe as their skill level and performances improve.
